Bourgeon Writes are regular opportunities for writers to share their work in a supportive environment. Come share something you’ve written, or just come and listen. Suggested donation of $5-$10 dollars to support the magazine Bourgeon (online at http://www.bourgeononlince.com) which has been serving the DC arts community since 2005. Poet Joseph Ross will be joining Bourgeon Magazine for a special Bourgeon Writes event at The Fridge August 25th from 7-9pm.
Joseph Ross moved to Washington, D.C. in 2000, where he founded the Writing Center at Carroll High School and taught at American University. Little Patuxent Review and Baltimore’s Pratt Library awarded their 2012 poetry prize to his poem “If Mamie Till Was the Mother of God.” He is the author of several books including the recently published The Bone Man, which one reviewer described saying, “the strength of the collection is the voice’s unabashed concern for other human beings… At their best, Ross’ poems find ways to merge images that bring to fore the surreal nature of persisting in the midst of great pain.” Come share your work, and listen to other poets read.
1. Actors from EMP and Single Carrot Theatre recorded selections of Latin American creation myths from Eduardo Galeano’s historical narrative, Memoria del Fuego.
2. 25 artists were given the stories to listen to create a new work to retell in their own voice and medium, anything from performance and dance to visual art, music, and film.
3. The results will be presented in one-night-only events at EMP Collective’s space EMP Collective’s space in Baltimore (8/17, 306 West Redwood St, 7pm) and at The Fridge (8/24, 516 ½ 8th Street SE, DC, 7pm).

Impossible Theater Company presents [missed connections], a devised play that uses an apocalyptic setting to explore the question: If you had one chance to be the person you’ve always wanted to be, what would you do? Four actors portray several characters in this devised theatrical performance directed by Nick Jonczak and featuring Ava Jackson, Alexandra Linn, and Heather Carter. Audience members are invited to join the cast in rediscovering taken-for granted experiences and feelings as lasts become firsts in a world where they are forced to confront the irreversible and tangibly finite passage of time.
